Absentee Ballot Information
 REQUESTING AN ABSENTEE BALLOT
  • NCGS 163-2302.2 provides that a written request for an absentee ballot is valid only if it is written entirely by the requester personally or on a form generated by the county board of elections and signed by the requestor. A voter, or a voter's near relative may contact the Board of Elections Office to request an "Absentee Ballot Request Form". These forms are numbered and recorded with the voter registration number.
  • Request forms must be RECEIVED in the Board of Elections Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Tuesday prior to the election in order to receive an absentee ballot.
  • A "NEAR RELATIVE" is defined as a spouse, brother, sister, parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, stepparent, stepchild, or verifiable legal guardian. A Power of Attorney is NOT acceptable unless the POA is also a near relative.
  • Each request must be signed by the voter or the voter's near relative. The near relative must also provide his/her name, address and relationship to the voter.
  • Absentee Ballots must be RECEIVED in the Board of Elections Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day before the election in order to be accepted. The absentee ballot application on the container envelope must be signed by the voter and witness. Ballots may be mailed or hand-delivered to the Board of Elections Office ONLY by the voter or the voter's near relative.
