Duties Performed

Emergency Management is a coordinated effort, involving local, state, and federal government agencies as well as volunteer orginizations. Within an intergrated emergency management framework, these entities assist citizens and their communities to prepare for, respond to, recover from and eliminate or reduce the efforts of natural or manmade emergencies and disasters.

The Emergency Management structure that exists today in the United States has its origins in the civil defense efforst that arose after World War II in response to the possibility of a nuclear attack. In the 1960's the field of emergency management began expanding, and by the 1980's the focus had widened to the multi-hazard approach that prevails today. In repsonse to the September 11th terrorist attacks the field has widened into the terrorism readiness and response arena. No matter what may bring about a particular type of event; the primary mission of emergency management is to prevent injuries, save lives, and reduce property damage through the four phase approach of emergency management; Prepardness, Response, Recovery, and Mitigation.

OUR MISSION

To protect the citizens and environment of Harnett County from the effects of disasters and emergencies through a unified and comprehensive emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery by local, State, and Federal partners, private industry and volunteer organizations.
