Asthma Coalition Projects & Programs 1. Air Quality Flag Program
This is an asthma-friendly flag program that uses a multi-colored flag system that will act as a daily indicator of outdoor air quality. You may see flags flying at participating government offices, schools, fire/rescue department, parks and recreation centers, daycares, and other businesses throughout the county. The flag color corresponds to the Air Quality Index (AQI). The color of the flag should provide guidance for the schedule of outdoor activities for that day. For more information on how you can find out today’s air quality color, visit http://daq.state.nc.us/airaware/.
Below is the meaning for each colored flag:
GREEN: The air outside is “good” and is considered healthy for everyone. Outdoor activities are fine for everyone. No health impacts expected.
YELLOW: The air outside is “moderate” and is unhealthy for only extremely sensitive people (people with respiratory diseases such as asthma or heart disease are considered sensitive). Prolonged outdoor activity should be limited for the extremely sensitive.
ORANGE: The air outside is “unhealthy for sensitive groups (people with respiratory diseases such as asthma or heart disease are considered sensitive).” On orange days sensitive individuals should limit prolonged outdoor exertion and alternative indoor activities should be made available as needed.
RED: The air outside is “unhealthy” for everyone. Everyone should avoid very active behavior outdoors.

2. Coach’s Clipboard Program
On a team of 15, you can expect at least one player will have asthma. Every year thousands of athletes with asthma successfully participate in a variety of athletic events. This program was created so coaches could learn about asthma, how it affects an athlete’s ability to compete, and how a coach can help athletes manage their symptoms while playing their very best! This is an asthma friendly program that was originally developed by Minnesota and Utah Department of Health.
Using this program will provide coaches with more tools to manage asthma and reduce the potential for severe asthma attacks during sport activities. Please contact me at 910-814-6248 or by email at mmclamb@harnett.org for more information.
3. Love My Lungs
By promoting Smoke Free Initiatives, we aim to increase awareness of the hazards of second hand smoke and assist smokers in taking the first steps to quit smoking. Through this program, we created posters and signs to display throughout the county regarding smoking cessation resources.

4. Asthma Educational Curriculum for Child Care Providers
The Asthma Curriculum for Child Care Providers is brought to you by the North Carolina Asthma Program in the Division of Public Health in conjunction with the Education and Public Awareness Committee of the Asthma Alliance of North Carolina (AANC). The purpose of this curriculum is to provide a standardized method of providing asthma education to child care providers in North Carolina. This project was funded as a part of a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
