HUGH A. CAMERON,

Manager of the Upchurch Milling & Storage Company at Raeford, is one of the most energetic businessmen in this official center of Hoke County, and is one of its most public spirited citizens. His experience has given him a broad contact with men and affairs, and he also possesses a very genial personality.

He was born in Harnett County, North Carolina, October 24, 1880, son of Alexander S. and Janet (McDonald) Cameron, natives of the same county, where his father spent his active career as a substantial farmer. His father died in 1905 and his mother still occupies the old homestead.

On that farm Hugh A. Cameron spent his boyhood days attending public schools there and a school at Broadway. When he was about twenty years of age he left the farm, and during the next five years was connected with a general mercantile business at Vass. Mr. Cameron for two years was in the turpentine business near Pensacola, Florida, and in 1908 he located at Raeford, before. it became the county seat of the newly established county of Hoke. He clerked in a local store, for one year operated a sawmill and wood working plant, and since then has concentrated his energies on the Upchurch Milling & Storage Company's business, being secretary and treasurer of the company. He has made this a very important industry since taking charge in 1918. The company manufacture flour, meal and feed stuff, having a flour mill with a capacity of fifty barrels daily, two corn mills, feed mill, wood working plant, lumber yard and ice plant; .It is an industry that furnishes employment to ten people. All the machinery is operated by electricity, each machine having a separate motor. The plant has about 20,000 feet of floor space.

Mr. Cameron married in June, 1914, Miss Florie Upchurch, daughter of Thomas B; and Mary (Johnson) Upchurch, both of whom were natives of Wake County, North Carolina. .Her father is president of the Upchurch Milling & Storage Company, is president of the Raeford Power and Manufacturing Company, the largest industrial concern in Raeford, and is also vice president of the Bank of Raeford, vice president of the Hoke Oil & Fertilizer Company, and is one of the largest landowners and farmers in this section of the state. Mrs. Cameron is one of. .a family of eight children, six of whom are living: The three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Cameron are: Thomas Upchurch Cameron, born in February, 1916; Hubert A., born September 6,1917; and Mollie Johnson, born in February, 1925. Mr. Cameron is a member of the Masonic Order, Woodmen of .the World, Kiwanis Club, Hoke Country Club, the Methodist Episcopal Church and in politics votes as a democrat.
