» Formal Learning Support

“A library that offers FORMAL LEARNING SUPPORT helps students who are enrolled in a formal program of education or who are pursuing their education through a program of home-schooling to attain their educational goals.” (Sandra Nelson, The New Planning for Results. Goals and objectives

Goal 10. Children who use the library will have the information, resources, and assistance they need to achieve success in their schooling.

  • The number of presentations made in schools that describe and promote the library’s formal learning support services will increase by 10 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • The number of families attending homeschool programs at the library will increase by 10 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • The number of formal learning support displays and resources (book lists, “homework helpers”) created by library staff will increase by 10 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • By 2005/2006, at least 85% of the parents of children who use the library will indicate on a survey that the library has the information, resources, and assistance they need to achieve success in their schooling.

Goal 11. Children who use the library will be supported in the development of the skills, interests, and passions necessary to succeed in school and other learning activities.

  • The number of library-sponsored children’s programs that develop the skills, interests, and passions necessary to succeed in school and other learning activities will increase by 4 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • The number of children who attend library-sponsored children’s programs that develop the skills, interests, and passions necessary to succeed in school and other learning activities will increase by 2 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • By 2005/2006, at least 85% of the parents of children who use the library will indicate on a survey that the library has supported their children in developing the skills, interests, and passions necessary to succeed in school and other learning activities.

Selected activities

  • The library staff will continue to visit school classrooms in order promote reading and use of the public library; book talks and story hours will be scheduled as requested.
  • The library staff will stay in contact with school media specialists to share information regarding school assignments.
  • The children’s librarian will plan and carry out weekly homeschool programs.
  • The library staff will continue to offer “story hour in a box” kits to the schools.
  • The library staff will create displays of books on current homework topics.
  • The library will participate in programs such as “Read Across America.”
  • The library staff will develop a “Please Let Us Know” program to encourage school teachers to inform the library about homework assignments.
  • The library staff will contact school teachers each fall with copies of the Harnett County Public Library reserve form so that they might reserve books on demand according to assignments.
