Goals and objectives

Goal 3. Adults who use the library will have the information, resources, and assistance they need for personal independent learning.

  • Total adult nonfiction book circulation for the Harnett County Library System will increase by 12 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • By 2005/2006, at least 85% of the adults who use the library for personal independent learning will indicate on a survey that the library has adequate information, resources, and assistance to meet their needs.

Goal 4. Children who use the library will develop a lifelong love of reading and learning.

  • Total children’s book circulation for the Harnett County Library System will increase by 6 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • The number of children’s programs sponsored by the library will increase by 4 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • The number of children who attend children’s programs sponsored by the library will increase by 2 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • By 2005/2006, at least 85% of the parents of children who use the library will indicate on a survey that the library has helped their children develop a love of reading and learning.

Goal 5. Library users will have access to space that facilitates a variety of activities that meet the needs of our community.

  • The number of programs held in library facilities but not sponsored by the library will increase by 7 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • The number of people who attend programs held in library facilities but not sponsored by the library will increase by 7 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • By 2005/2006, at least 85% of the organizations that use library facilities for programs will indicate on a survey that the facilities met their needs.

Goal 6. Library users will have access to programs and materials on a wide variety of topics to address their need for ongoing educational opportunities and their desire for personal growth.

  • The number of programs held in library facilities and sponsored by the library will increase by 7 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • The number of people who attend programs held in library facilities and sponsored by the library will increase by 7 per cent each year for the next five years.

  • By 2005/2006, at least 85% of the people who attend programs held in library facilities and sponsored by the library will indicate on a survey that the programs were good or excellent.

Selected activities

  • The library staff will allocate 40 per cent of the annual materials budget to the purchase of nonfiction materials for adults and children.
  • The library staff will provide a broad range of materials in a number of useful formats (audio, video, print, equipment) for individuals to pursue personal projects.
  • Each year, each library staff member will prepare at least one reading list and one book display on a topic of interest to adults pursuing personal independent learning or on a topic that will instill a lifelong love of reading and learning among children.
  • The library will continue to offer outreach services to senior citizens.
  • The library will continue to offer outreach services to homebound patrons.
  • The children's librarian will continue to offer weekly story hours for preschool children at the main library.
  • The children's librarian will continue to plan, promote, and present after-school specials for school-age children during the school year.
  • The library staff will offer a summer reading program for school-age children in all libraries.
  • The library will continue to offer outreach services to preschool children in day-care centers (at least nine day cares each week).
  • The library staff will plan and provide adult programming based on previous year's interest.
  • The library staff will provide programs of adult interest that are not currently offered by Central Carolina Community College, the Cooperative Extension Service, Smart Start, or other organizations in Harnett County.
  • The library staff will work with the Friends of the Harnett County Library to provide programs of adult interest.
  • The library staff will make available its facilities for use by outside groups that wish to sponsor ongoing educational opportunities and other activities that meet the needs of our community.
