Mission Statement: The objective of the Harnett County Parks and Recreation Department is to provide with the assistance of volunteer community organizations, and other local, state, and federal agencies, a broad and comprehensive program of leisure recreational opportunities and facilities for all citizens regardless of age or disability within budgetary limitations.
Services and Programs
1. Anderson Creek Senior Center
- Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm
- Services provided include but are not limited to nutrition, educational programs, craft classes, health screenings, health promotion, socialization, outreach, information and referral, and transportation.
2. Municipal Program
- Annual grant program which provides direct cash flow to each municipal recreation department to use as they desire.
3. Rural Program
- Provide technical assistance and facilities for the contracted youth programs of Western Harnett Youth Recreation, Inc, and for the adult organizations of the Harnett County Church League and the Harnett County Fire/Rescue League.
4. County-wide Tournaments and Special Events
- Provide technical assistance and coordination of municipal departments and rural communities for league tournaments (adult and youth) and special events.
5. County-wide Senior Citizens Special Events
- Provide and promote health fairs, bus trips/tours, senior golf tournaments, Mid-Carolina Senior Games and NC Senior Games.
6. Inventory of Facilities
- Neill’s Creek County Park (adjacent to Harnett Central High School) 25 acres, 6 tennis courts (3 with lights), 2 softball fields ( 1 with lights), concession building with storage room and restrooms, 1 open/activity field, parking area, water fountains, irrigation system, and landscaping.
- Barbecue Creek County Park
(adjacent to Western Harnett High School) Same as Neill’s Creek County Park except both softball/baseball fields have lights. A PARTF grant was awarded to Harnett County in 2008 to update inadequate field and tennis lighting, add a walking trail, picnic shelter, and concession/multi-use building, and renovation of the tennis courts. Project completion is estimated for 2010.
- South Harnett Park
(adjacent to South Harnett School) 8 acres, open multi purpose field with baseball/softball infields at opposite ends.
- Anderson Creek Senior Center
2000 square foot building consisting of fully equipped kitchen, office, craft room, closets, restrooms, and assembly room. 2.5 acre site also includes a 28 ft x 42 ft picnic shelter with tables, parking, landscaping, and irrigation system.
- Cape Fear River Trail Park (located on Hwy 217 on the Cape Fear River in Erwin) 16 acres of walking trails, overlooks, canoe access, restrooms, and picnic shelter.
