Deputy Harnett County Finance Officer Allen Coats has been elected to serve as a director on the North Carolina Government Finance Officers Association (NCGFOA) Executive Committee. The appointment was made during the NCGFOA spring conference The Executive Committee consists of the president, president-elect, treasurer, secretary, and three directors elected from the members-at-large to serve one-year terms.
“I am honored by this opportunity to serve my fellow local government professionals from across the state in this capacity,” said Coats. “The NCGFOA has provided me with countless hours of quality continuing professional education over my 26-year career and I am excited to assist in that continued excellence.”
Coats came to work with Harnett County as Deputy Finance Officer on May 19, 2014. Prior to that, he served as Finance Officer for more than 19 years at various municipalities in central North Carolina and has been actively involved in capital financing projects including schools, a town hall, community and recreation center and numerous public utilities projects.
He has lived in Harnett County for 45 years and is a graduate of Western Harnett High School. He holds undergraduate degrees in Accounting and Business Administration from Methodist University and is a graduate of the UNC School of Government Municipal and County Administration course. Coats has been a Certified Government Financial Officer with the NCGFOA since 1999.
The NCGFOA, an association of more than 400 local government finance professionals, promotes the improvement of the methods of governmental finance in North Carolina as developed and recommended by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), The North Carolina Department of the State Treasurer, and other recognized authorities in the field of government administration.
