Citizens Needed to Serve on Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee

Harnett County Parks and Recreation is seeking residents to serve on an advisory board to guide the planning and development of future parks and recreational amenities, and to champion recreation in Harnett County.

The department created the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee to advise County staff and the Harnett County Board of Commissioners as they plan for future recreational needs and trends, and to promote the County’s existing parks, facilities and events. The committee will provide input for long-range planning for allocating resources toward park projects and programs, land acquisition and the development of new parks, and marketing of the County’s existing parks and programs.

Committee members must live in Harnett County with one member from each of the county’s five commissioners districts, and four at-large members. The committee’s membership should be reflective of the county’s population.

“Our goal in creating this committee is for its members to represent the interests and needs of all of Harnett County’s citizens in terms of recreation,” said Harnett County Parks & Recreation Director Carl Davis. “We want the committee’s membership to be reflective of the county’s population.”

Davis said Harnett County Parks and Recreation is growing rapidly with numerous projects currently underway across the county.

“The Board of Commissioners adopted a Parks and Recreation Comprehensive Master Plan in 2017, which said the county has a significant need for more parks, programs, greenways and water access,” said Davis. “We are excited to partner with our citizens to help mold and develop our current parks system in to something that benefits all of our citizens.”

Members will be appointed to serve three-year terms and may serve up to two consecutive terms before having to rotate off the committee.

The committee will meet the second Tuesday of January, March, May, July, September and November at 6 p.m., in the County Administration Building at 420 McKinney Parkway, Lillington.
