Harnett County is seeking members to serve on the Harnett County District H Tourism Development Authority. The Authority was formed by the Harnett County Board of Commissioners after the North Carolina General Assembly passed Session Law 2017-202, which created Harnett County District H as a taxing district and allowed for the levy of a room occupancy tax within the district. Harnett County District H consists of all of Harnett County outside of the Averasboro Township (which is part of the Dunn Area Tourism Authority).
The current room occupancy tax levy in Harnett County District H is 3-percent of the gross receipts derived from the rental of any room, lodging, or accommodation furnished by a hotel, motel, inn, tourist camp, or similar place within the district that is subject to State sales tax.
The Harnett County District H Tourism Development Authority is charged with using the revenue generated from the District H occupancy tax to promote travel and tourism, and for tourism-related expenditures in the district.
The Authority is made up of five members – two who are affiliated with businesses that collect the tax and three who are active in the promotion of travel and tourism in the district. The Harnett County Finance Officer, and Harnett County Manager or her designee will serve as non-voting ex officio members on the Authority.
Harnett County is currently seeking applicants to fill seats represented by individuals or organizations currently active in the promotion of travel and tourism in the district. Once all members have been appointed, the Authority will meet monthly. Beyond the initial terms of 1, 2 or 3 years, Authority members will be appointed to three-year terms.
Anyone who would like to serve on the Harnett County District H Tourism Development Authority must complete and submit a Board Membership Application, which may be found online at http://www.harnett.org/boc/downloads/Application.pdf or by contacting the Harnett County Manager’s Office at (910) 893-7555. Completed applications may be submitted to Shannon Eason at email@example.com, delivered to the County Manager’s Office at 420 McKinney Parkway, Lillington, or mailed to the “Harnett County Manager’s Office” at P.O. Box 759, Lillington, NC 27546. Applicants do not need to indicate their County Commissioner’s district on their application, but should list the tourism-related organization with which they are affiliated.
The deadline to submit applications for consideration by the Harnett County Board of Commissioners at their December 3, 2018, meeting is November 26.
