Community Update Meeting at Northwest Harnett Fire Department

Harnett County will host a Community Update meeting Thursday, May 5, 2016, at 7 p.m. at Northwest Harnett Fire Department. The purpose of this informational meeting is to provide residents with an update from county leaders and department heads on projects and programs currently underway in Harnett County, and to give citizens an opportunity to ask questions. Northwest Harnett Fire Department is located at 6015 Christian Light Road, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526.

Harnett County will host a Community Update meeting Thursday, May 12, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. at Erwin Elementary School. The purpose of this informational meeting is to provide residents with an update from county leaders and department heads on projects and programs currently underway in Harnett County, and to give citizens an opportunity to ask questions. RTRP 2016 State of the Research Triangle Region

The Research Triangle Regional Partnership (RTRP) will host the 2016 State of the Research Traingle Region May 19, 2016, at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Conference Center in Durham. Registration and networking will take place from 7 to 7:30 a.m. with the breakfast and program taking place from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Campbell University is a presenting sponsor for this event. Boogie on Broad featuring Spare Change

Boogie on Broad, featuring Spare Change, will be held May 19, 2016, in Downtown Dunn at the intersection of Broad Street and Wilson Avenue. The concert is free and includes entertainment and DJ Butch Halpin of Carolina Sounds, face painting and balloons by Sybil the Clown, line dancing fun and much more. Every Thursday at 9 a.m. Get outside, get moving, get healthy and get moving. Participants, ages 12 and up, should be able to hike 3 to 6 miles on trails that can be flat, hilly and include steps. Please note that we can make adjustments in the route if you want to hike less than three miles. We do stop to observe wildlife, enjoy environmental education moments and to listen to our natural world. Call the visitor center for meeting location (910) 893-4888 extension 0. Volunteer Work Day at Raven Rock State Park

Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Do you enjoy visiting Raven Rock State Park? Have you ever thought about giving back to the park? Well, here is your chance! We will be holding a volunteer work day Saturday, July 9, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This activity is suitable for adults and children above 12 years of age. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal adult guardian present. Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing for outdoor work and wear closed toed shoes. Meet at the Visitor Center and bring work gloves, water, and snacks. If you have any questions, please contact the park office at 910-893-4888 or raven.rock@ncparks.gov.

Nature's Seedlings: A Monthly Nature Discovery Program – Water, Who Needs It?

Friday, July 15, 2016 10 a.m. Nature’s Seedlings is a monthly nature discovery program for ages 3 to 7 being held every third Friday of the month. Explore the world of nature through games, exploration, interaction and crafts. July's program is Water, Who Needs It? Children will explore the importance of water for people, animals and plants. We will be hiking down to Campbell Creek to find critters that call the creek home. This one-mile hike does include a ˝ mile hike uphill. Bring water shoes, a towel and drinking water. Registration is not required but please notify us if you are bringing a group. Children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the program. Programs will be held outside weather permitting. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Sunset and Full Moon Hike at Raven Rock State Park

Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 7:15 p.m. Hike to the Overlook and watch the sun set over the Cape Fear River and then as we hike back to the visitor center we will see the moon rise over the trees in the parking lot. Listen to the sounds of the park’s critters going to rest for the night while others are just waking up. For this easy 2 mile hike we will be meeting at the Visitor Center. Please bring water, flashlights and a camera.

Lunch With Hummingbirds

Saturday, July 23 at 11 a.m. Come out to Raven Rock State Park and have lunch with Raven Rock’s many (over 30) hummingbirds. Learn interesting facts about hummingbirds. Wear something red, try feeding a hummingbird and afterwards watch PBS Nature “Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air” (55 minutes) in the auditorium while making your own hummingbird nest. This event will be held rain or shine. Meet at the Visitor Center.
