Community and Rural Development

Harnett Voices
Meets 4th Thursday, 9:00 am, Cooperative Extension Conference Room

It takes more than economic development to strengthen Harnett County, it takes community development.

Harnett County is one of the fastest growing counties in North Carolina. This is because of it's close proximity to Wake County and Cumberland County. In order to meet the needs of the growing population and make sure Harnett thrives, residents must come up with innovative solutions to solve growing issues. Comunity development makes sure this is accomplished by creating a strong economic base, physical infrastructure, community infrastructure, Human and social capital, and leadership infrastructure.

Cooperative Extension helps the community in a number of ways by offering community development services, such as:

· Programs to promote the importance of Entrepreneurship and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to the community’s youth;

· Equips youth with skills (teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, etc.) and education needed to enter into the workforce, become responsible citizens, and live a healthy life;

· Collaborates with government agencies, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and businesses in order to reduce poverty and provide needed services to the community (food pantries, community gardens, health and nutrition, etc.);

· Helps nonprofits obtain 501(c)3 status and develop into effective organizations;

· And the list goes on.

If interested in any assistance, please contact Kittrane Sanders, Community Rural Development Agent,Harnett County Cooperative Extension at 910-814-6028 or ksanders@harnett.org.
