Central Permitting processes applications and issues construction permits. However, the Building Inspections Division is intricately involved from ‘beginning to end’ during the project. The division enforces the North Carolina State Building Codes as adopted by the Building Code Council through the engineering division of the N.C. Department of Insurance (NC DOI). The Building Inspections Division inspects construction for all trades including building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing, as well as manufactured housing and modular set up compliance. The division is proud of the services it provides and the methods through which inspections are scheduled, including internet scheduling (Click2Gov), interactive voice scheduling (IVR) and calling direct at 910.893.7525 option 3.
In addition, the Building Inspection Division is responsible for project plan review. A review is required for residential and commercial projects but each project determines the specific requirements. Projects can be, but not limited to, stick built homes, additions/renovations, attached garages and other construction. Additionally, commercial projects usually require extensive plan review that could involve other departmental approval before permits are issued. The Building Codes Administrator oversees and conducts the division’s plan review and workflow; you may contact him directly with plan review or code questions at 910-893-7525 extension 6420.
