Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies in Harnett County

Harnett County Animal Services has been notified by the State Laboratory of Public Health that a raccoon which attacked a dog outside a residence on N.C. 210 in Angier Tuesday has tested positive for rabies. The raccoon reportedly came out of the woods and attacked an 11-year-old Dachshund at a residence on N.C. 210 near Lipscomb Road. The dog has been treated for its injuries and is currently being monitored at its home. Harnett County Animal Control officers responded to the scene and sent the raccoon to the state lab for testing. Animal Services was notified Wednesday afternoon of the positive test. As a result, Harnett County Animal Services will extend its rabies vaccination hours until 4 p.m. today and from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

All Harnett County pet owners are encouraged to make sure their pets’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date. Harnett County Animal Services provides 1-year rabies vaccinations at a cost of $6.
