Welcome to Animal Services

The County of Harnett Animal Services mission is to protect the health and safety of citizens, advocate animal protection / welfare and promote the humane treatment of all animals.

Animal Services has two separate but equal divisions that work together to carry out our mission.

Animal control efforts are concentrated on rabies control and public safety through enforcement of the County’s Animal Control Ordinance, capture of non-immunized dogs and cats, and gaining control of roaming livestock. If you are in need of an animal pick up, need a rabies vaccine, or have an animal complaint please call 910-893-0800.

The Animal Shelter's efforts are concentrated on the special love and attention to safety, well-being and health of animals in the shelter’s care. Additionally, the Animal Shelter oversees donations, adoptions, volunteer program, public events and reuniting lost pets. Please help us with these efforts by adopting, donation and volunteering! For more information about these please call 910-814-2952.

The Animal Shelter's motto is: Care they need, Love they deserve, CHEWS TO ADOPT!!!

COVID-19 Updates

As COVID-19 impacts our community, the Harnett County Animal Shelter is likely to see a trend towards more intakes and fewer adoptions and rescue outcomes.  This can quickly lead to overcrowding and increased euthanasia for space. We recognize Animal Services is an essential service to the community and operations will remain open but with practices to mitigate unnecessary exposure for the health and protection of staff, to ensure the well-being of animals in our care, and reduce community spread of COVID-19.  We are taking active measures to reduce all non-essential shelter intake which includes suspending owner surrenders and encouraging owners to keep their pets at home wherever possible.

Every effort will be made to return pets in the field rather than impounding.  Animal intake and field services will be limited to all high priority/emergency situations which include law enforcement assist, sick and injured animals, animal cruelty, animal bites and dangerous/aggressive dog complaints. For all priority/emergency situations, our field services department can be reached by calling 910-893-0800 during normal business hours M-F and the sheriff’s department afterhours and on weekends.

Animal sheltering operations will continue in order to provide appropriate care for all animals currently in the facility and facilitate adoptions, return to owners, and rabies vaccinations.  To reduce the overall number of people in our shelter, animal services will conduct all pet redemption, adoptions, and rabies shots by appointment only and with strict cleaning protocol for public areas of the shelter.  To schedule an appointment to redeem an owned animal, view if your pet is currently in our shelter, adopt an animal, or schedule a rabies vaccine, please call 910-814-2952.

Beginning March 19, Harnett County Animal Services will waive adoption fees for all animals at the Harnett County Animal Shelter. The waiver includes all regular adoption fees, with the exception of an $18 charge for rabies vaccine and microchip for the adopted pet. Citizens are able to adopt animals on Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays from 1pm-4pm or Saturdays from 10am-2pm. To view the animals available for adoption, visit: www.harnett.org/animalservices/animals-for-adoption.asp.

Please visit Harnett County’s COVID-19 webpage for the latest information from the NC DHHS and the CDC.
