In Harnett County, we are subject to flooding and flash flooding many times throughout the year.  Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. People underestimate the force and power of water, and believe, "I can make it through there."  Unfortunately, the end up being wrong and it can cost them their lives.  That is why there is a national campaign to remind everyone to

Here are some flood facts for you:

  • Over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. 
  • The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters.
  • Driving around "road closed" barriers is one of the highest reasons vehicles end up in flooded areas or in washed out areas of roads due to flooding.
  • It takes only 12 inches of rushing water to carry away a car and 2 feet of rushing water can carry away almost any other type of vehicle.
  • It only takes 6 inches of flood water can knock over an adult. I
  • It is NEVER safe to drive or walk into flood waters.
