Dial 9-1-1 in an emergency only. If an emergency situation (a crime, fire, serious injury or illness) arises, ask yourself whether police, fire department, or medical assistance is needed right now to protect life or property. If the answer is “yes”, then immediately dial 9-1-1 and advise the telecommunicator of what has happened or is happening.

If you are not sure whether or not the situation is an emergency, call 9-1-1 and let the telecommunicators make that determination. Always call 9-1-1 to report a fire, report a possible medical emergency, or to report a crime in progress.

The time to put an emergency kit together is before a disaster. Don't wait until it is too late. An emergency kit is a container, bag or tote of items your family may need in or after an emergency. Most of the items can be found in your house. It is important to put them in one place and be sure every family member knows where the kit is kept.

RECOMMENDED EMERGENCY KIT CONTENTS:

  • Food – non-perishable and canned food supply for 3 to 7 days
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and National oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio with extra batteries
  • Cell phone with charger
  • First aid kit and first aid book
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Manual can opener for food
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off water

  • Prescription medications and glasses

To better prepare yourself for an medical emergency, natural disaster or unexpected emergency event, we recommend you do the following:

You can prepare yourself in case you are present during an active shooter situation.  All across the United States, students, workers and others are taught to RUN. HIDE. FIGHT in the event of a critical incident like these.  It doesn't matter if this occurs at a mall, school or local store, remember... RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.  Watch the information video from the FBI to learn more about RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.
