2023 Harnett County Trail Challenge

As you have probably heard, 2023 has been designated as the Year of the Trail in North Carolina. Throughout the year, Harnett County has been promoting trails and encouraging you to get outside and enjoy nature.

During the month of September, North Carolina Cooperative Extension - Harnett County would like to challenge you to hike as many trails in Harnett County as you can and report your experiences to us. You may not know it, but there are approximately 28 miles of trail in Harnett County that are open to the public. From Raven Rock State Park to the Cape Fear River Trail in Erwin, there are many opportunities to get out and experience fun and adventure.

How does the challenge work? First, pick a trail or trails from the Google Form below that can be combined, and plan your hike. Once you have completed the hike, use the Google Form below to record your activity. Use a separate form to record each hike. The person who completes all the trails or the most trail miles is the winner (each trail will only count once for the purpose of choosing a winner). In the case of a tie, we will draw those names from a hat to determine the winner.

If you are new to hiking and would like to learn more, we will be announcing a group hike for each Friday in September on Facebook. We will begin by covering some trail basics such as the 10 Essentials, Leave No Trace, Trail Etiquette, and more, followed by a short hike on one of the trails in Harnett County.

The winner of this challenge will receive a lightweight daypack for use on your future outdoor adventures. So, beginning September 1, get out there and hit the trails. All hikes must be reported by September 30. We look forward to hearing your stories of fun and adventure!

Enjoy the journey!
